Biography

Known for his warm, candid and often funny speaking style, Tate describes himself as a “working-class boy from Essex who happens to be trans.” His Fireside Chats have become a trusted educational tool for organisations seeking honest, human-centred conversations about gender, masculinity and the value trans men bring to society. In 2023, he founded Tate Smith Consulting, working with clients including Barclays, McCann, JP Morgan and the Science Museum to progress trans inclusion. His work raises awareness of issues often missing from public discourse: the invisibility of trans men, male privilege, healthy masculinity, men’s mental health and the menopause.
Tate has supported major corporations such as Clifford Chance and Anglo American in developing transgender policies, including adding top surgery to private healthcare insurance. He works with organisations of all sizes to create safer workplaces for trans+ people and also brings his expertise into healthcare through his advisory role on the NHS-approved OBS UK Study. He has also advised the Science Museum on inclusive language in exhibitions, where his story is on display until 2033.
